Mango, Our Lovebird Pet

Take a look at this fruit for a moment. Doesn't it resemble with the bird below?
Meet our one and only pet, Mango. He was named after the fruit, of course. Don't the colors look exactly like the fruit, mango? Mango has been in our family since the kids were little, about 10 years ago. Our after-school-babysitter owned him and suddenly, she announced to our kids that she was selling Mango for $75. It didn't take a lot of convincing, the kids told our babysitter, "consider it sold." The kids paid for it out of their own money, if I recall it correctly. Dad said, "hey if you can take care of him, fine with me." My husband doesn't like pets and I am not fond of them either. I am too busy. The kids have been doing a good job taking care of him, I must say. When daughter S is home, she takes Mango to her room and spends time with him. She makes him do little tricks like letting Mango lie on his back on the palm of her hand and Mango gets mesmerized by it. She is the only one who can make him do it. He is so attached to her.
Mango sleeps in daughter A's room every single night. She takes care of the food and water and the cleaning of the cage ocassionally. Once his cage is covered with a blanket, it is his cue to go to sleep. He sleeps through until 5:30 AM in the morning. He let's us know when he wants out of the cage because he keeps rattling the cage door or he makes clucking noise. He will not stop until he gets our attention and it can be annoying. My husband who doesn't have tolerance to noise is the first one to come to his rescue. He lets him out and wanders around the house.
Lately, he found a new place that he likes to hang out...perching on top of my monitor. I don't know why but he seems to enjoy it here even when I am not home. I wonder if he feels that eventually my daughter will be going to college, thus, he senses the need to start bonding with my husband and I this early on. It is perfectly fine with me. However, he gets carried away when I turn on my speakers. The other day, I was audio chatting with friends in the Philippines, and I had trouble understanding what my friends were saying. Mango chimed in with the noise. The louder the speakers, the louder he gets, too. Therefore, I had no choice but to turn the speakers off and resort to typing my message on YM instead. He is full of antics! Lately, he seemed to find enjoyment pooping on the screen of my monitor. I think it was because I reacted the moment he did it and he thought it was fun. So, I knew then that I needed to send him a message. Now, every time he turns around and acts as if he is about to drop something, I would sternly say "NO Mango, NO!" Good news, my monitor has been nice and free of any droppings lately.

I'm not very fond of birds but your Mango sounds like fun. I like the pic of him perched on top of your monitor. Cute!

Mango is adorable and you're right, he does resemble the colors of the fruit.

It's nice that he has been trained to live freely. It must be nice having a pet bird fly freely inside the house.

@steph, you are a girl of few words..hehe. how are things? call mom okay?

@sesame, thanks! he spent the whole hour on top of my monitor again...sleeping most of the time.

@rachel,Mango is all over our house. if i can't find him, i just call him by his name, and he responds instantly.

mango's story is a cute story, he is a lovable bird. it might be true - he must have sensed that soon it would just be you, him and hubby. what happens if you all go away on a holiday? who takes care of mango?

Birds are easy to train, but it still need a lot of patience. Yours is looking good. Bibs (my niece) favorite are golden fish, that she left quite a few in Manila and when I was there the last time they are slowly disappearing. My bro. grandchild 3 year old chin in Philly has also a fish named Nemo, and maybe the 3rd one already.

@mousey, yup, Mango is used to being photographed. he has tons of picturs with my daughters.

@vic, birds are easy to train, you are right. lovebirds, especially, like to make lovey dovey with people. we also had an acquarium before containing all kinds of colorful fish but too much work for me, so i got rid of it.

That is so cute! Wish I had a pet like Mango when I was young :) Ever since my cocker spaniel died I haven't had the urge to get another pet because it is a big responsibility.

lovely bird, and looks very intelligent/smart! nakakaliw magka pet tulad ni mango.

"ay inda" - teach those words to the bird. Kasi naman I lost my comments again. LOL.

Sa Virac, nilalastiko namin yan. And we didn't realize na nagsasalita pala sila. In HK I avoid getting in contact with birds because of the flu outbreak, well in our residential street where I live, may birds shop kaya todo iwas.

Mango is so cute and adorable, Belle. And I love the name. :) I am not fond of pets either. I already have three kids to look after and I know that a pet is also a responsibility. I think it was three summers ago when I bought the kids one fish each. Told them that it's their responsibility. But I ended up the one cleaning the aquarium. The fish have long been gone now and we never had any pet after that.

Yes indeed, Mango resembles that mango so much LOL. I think he thinks the webcam perched on top of your monitor belong to the same species. "Aha, finally, I found my partner!" :D he is so adorable... And toilet-trained too!

@Dine, I forgot to answer your questions re: Mango. He will be staying with my daughter's friend while we are on vacation.

@K, hehehe...after you hit them with lastiko, what do you do with them? are u still avoiding birds in HK this time?

@niceheart, my daughter finally gave up on her fish because it kept dying. we used to have fish pond and boy, when it was clean, it was beautiful but when it was filthy, it was ugly. it took half a day to clean...too messy.

@chateau, hmmm, good observation! you are probably right because he sometimes acts funny around the webcam. yup, i potty trained him. no more droppings on my computer.

@eric, lovebird is less maintenance and is very loving. so, if you decide of getting a bird pet, lovebird is a good choice.

@iskoo, he is like a human being, very smart and can sense what is going on.

Oh, cute bird. Doesn't it attempt to fly away? And I'm amazed at his longevity.. 10 years!

Belle,
Ang cute naman ni Mango who resembles a mango.

Belle TH said...

@rhodora, he never attempts to fly out of the house. when he gets tired wandering around, he comes back to his cage. he is actually older than 10 years old because the previous owner had him for a long time before we bought him.

@kk, he does resemble the colors of mango, doesn't he? whoever thought of his name was clever.

I also have a lovebird named Mango. He's a great guy.
We thought he was the only one, but I guess not!
They look exactly the same. Did you make a replica of him?

he died last summer after being with us for 14 years. it was sad for all of us especially for my younger daughter because he slept with my daughter every single night. now, my daughter asks me to sleep with her at night.
