A Different Approach to Cooking

Here's how the packet of Vege Fresh Fish looks like (for dangkin) The picture on the left is showing only half of the diameter of the packet.

Does this dish look appetizing to you? Do they look like fish steaks? Well, this is actually a vegetarian dish made out of soy. Believe me, you will love it. Even the picky eater like my daughter ate it with gusto. My husband thought it was because of the sauce that I whipped together to spread over the dish. Nah, the veggie fish steak itself was good.

You know where I got it? From the oriental store in Phoenix, called Lee Lee. It costs a little over $6.00 but it makes a meal for the whole family. One slice was enough to fill me up plus a veggie side dish, of course. It is a good alternative for meatless dinner and it is healthy.

It was so simple to cook. I pan fried each side until light golden brown. Then I chopped some red and bell pepper, some mushrooms, onions, slices of ginger and threw it all in the pan and cooked it until transluscent. I added a tablespoon of blackbean garlic sauce for flavor. Let it simmer for 2 to 3 minutes. Then I spread it over the dish. Finally, I opened a package of brown gravy and boiled it up as per instructions. I then poured it over the whole dish. There you go, a delectable meatless dinner.

Hmmm...speaking of Lent, I just realise I missed Ash Wednesday last week :(

Sounds yummy Belle! If you like them spicy you can try following recipe. The ingredients are 2 raw mango, 8 red chillis and 6 bird chillis (both boiled), 2 tsp shrimp paste (we call them terasi or belacan in Malay language), 1,5 tsp. salt, 2 tsp. sugar, and 1 tbsp. of fish sauce. Cut the mango julienne, ground the chillis, shrimp paste, salt and sugar (or you can food processing them but make sure not too smooth), add in the fish sauce and mix well. Add in the julienne mango and serve with the fried fish. Bonne Appetite!

@vern, this dish would make a good alternative dish for lent season then.

@elyani, thanks mi amiga bonita, for the recipe. it looks yummy! i will definitely make this recipe next time I prepare this dish. i just have to cut down a bit on the chili because my chilli tolerance is average.

if we had that packed meal here, it would have been timely for the fridays of lent. my mom does all the cooking...maybe one day, i have to learn to cook!

Looks like the fish I eat sometimes at home, but without the gravy. I think yours look delicious. Too bad I can't get the sauce. On 2nd thoughts, if this is Oriental, then I should be able to find it here...

I've had veggie fish before - I agree that it's very good. My husband would love this dish. He's vegetarian.

@tepsiepsie, oh, you love this dish. i promise i will cook it for you when you come home. love u!

@iskoo, you have tried this before. masarap, di ba?

@sexy mom, you can probably find it in the frozen section of the Chinese supermarket.

@sesame, i used to eat at a vegetarian resto in seattle and i especially like the vege salmon they served. i was able to duplicate the dish at home. i just used the regular brown gravy.

@cai, i wish i could be 100% vegetarian. it is hard especially i am cooking for a family who loves to eat meat. this dish is so easy to make...try it sometimes.

@dangkin, i posted the picture of the packet just for you. hope you find it in your oriental store.

I haven't tried anything veggie yet. I also have picky eaters here at home. That dish looks delicious, belle.

At first I thought it was salmon steaks. I try to have more soy in our diet, so far we have tofu and soy milk. I'll look for that here.

That looks yummy indeed. Perfect for Lenten season.

You probably don't know but I used to be a "semi-vegetarian". As a preparation for being a vegetarian, I didn't eat pork or beef for several years. I was gradually helping my body get accustomed to no meat then eventually I was going to give up chicken and seafoods. But that changed when I met my husband. He's from Batangas ... with all the fiesta I attended, my self control broke down and succumbed to some meat. A story of a frustrated vegetarian. Oh well, that's life.

My friends who started the vegetarian program with me are now full pledged vegans. I had lunch with them a few months ago and they took me to a vegetarian restaurant in Greenhills. I was amazed at how some dishes looked like real meat and fish but they were actually made from components of soya and vegetables. Amazing!

@KK, i love tofu, too. i pan fry it and cook with my pechay and gravy. sarap!

@rachel, really? that is great! when we used to live in Seattle, we would always go to this bamboo resto that served vegetarian dishes made to look like fish, pork, and chicken. and the kids loved it and raved about it from time to time.
